Jatoba Table

Trying to recall what year it was that I built this table. Pretty sure it was 2005 and must’ve been around October, because it seems like we had Thanksgiving dinner on it shortly after it was completed. This one was easy in some ways and quite tough in others. It was also the first oil and wax finish for me, which was huge. I will never use poly or varnish on anything but floors, wainscoting, ceilings or outdoor furniture ever again. The tactile difference is amazing and it only requires a fresh steel-wooling and new was application about once every year or so. Worth it. The desk I am working at this very moment is oil and wax as well.

Easy:

  • It’s a table – four legs and a slab. No problem.
  • Wood World glued-up the boards for me to make the blank. I just finished it up by sanding and chamfering the edges, etc.

Not so Easy:

  • Tapering the legs. All I’ve got is a little jobsite Makita table saw at the time. About burned the motor out.
  • Drawers. Dawn wanted drawers in which to store place settings, napkins, etc. Dawn’s wish… my command.
  • Maneuvering. Holy SHIT is this material DENSE. Thing weighs a ton.
